If everyone has a superpower, are those powers still… super? Sure feels that way if you’re the one person who doesn’t have a special ability, I guess—which is where we meet Jen (Máiréad Tyers) in the charming trailer for Hulu’s Extraordinary.

The premise is straightforward:

Meet Jen. She lives in a world where everyone has a superpower. Everyone except her. Which is just sodding great. Extraordinary is somewhere between a sitcom and an existential crisis: an eye-popping, shocking, hilarious, and bittersweet comedy about finding your way in the world, when all you’ll ever be is ‘ordinary’.

“Somewhere between a sitcom and an existential crisis” is a phrase I would not believe in the slightest were this an American TV show, but from across the pond? Yeah, they can maybe pull this off.

Extraordinary comes from writer Emma Moran and Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films, and also stars Derry Girls‘ Siobhán McSweeney as Jen’s mum; Robbie Gee (Small Axe) as her stepdad; Sofia Oxenham (Cursed) as her friend Carrie; Bilal Hasna as her friend Kash; and Luke Rollason (Industry) as the curiously named Jizzlord. He’s the one who says the dog is a demon. Maybe he’s right?

Extraordinary premieres on Hulu on January 25th, 2023.
